In the Late Medieval and Renaissance ages, knights and other men-at-arms wore military helmets called close helmets or close helms. Even through the middle of the 17th century, some cuirassiers with heavy armour used it. It was a fully enclosed helmet with an inbuilt bevor and a movable visor.
The close helmet was created in the late 15th century from the latest iterations of the sallet and the visually comparable armet. It was occasionally referred to as a "armet" in modern sources.
The tight helmet was popular for use in competitions as well as on the battlefield. Rich individuals frequently possessed "garnitures," which were armours with removable pieces for heavy or light field use and the various tournament combat styles. For usage in jousting, garlands typically feature components for strengthening the left side of the helmet. These pieces of advantage or "double pieces" were used as reinforcement.
