Touareg's New-Generation Band Has Further Evolved 'Desert Blues! '
It will soon be 20 years since the 21st century began. The genre that made the most breakthrough in world music during that time was, after all, “desert blues.” Not to mention Tina Liwen, who is the pioneer of that scene, “Desert Blues New Generation,” which was influenced by them, are appearing one after another. Among them, the one that is getting the most attention is this Tami Crest. They have already visited Japan multiple times, and are already well known in Japan, and have announced their first new work since their previous work “Kidal” (Rice INR-7115) in 2017.
Tami Crest was formed in 2006 in the northern Malian town of Kidal. The main members are nomads living around the Sahara Desert called Tuaregs, and when fighting broke out in Kidal, the leader and vocal/lead guitar Usman Ag Mosa formed the group with the idea of resisting with music without using weapons. Then, in 2008, I met Chris Eckman, the current owner of Glitterbeat, and while participating in his band's album, they made their debut by recording “Mountain” (Rice INR-887) in 2010 with Chris's production. Next, “Tumastine” (same INR-888) was released in '11, and “Shatma” (alter-pop) was released in '13, and the sound created by my senior, Tina Liwen, was further developed, and these works attracted worldwide attention for their fresh desert blues with a sense of youthfulness and strength. Furthermore, they visited Japan for the first time in '17, when “Kidal” was released, which had a huge impact on African music fans in Japan.
And in this work, which is the 5th work in total, while following the format of “Desert Blues,” which sang about the conflicts that have plagued the people of Tuareg and the way people live, etc., it also incorporates a global perspective unique to them, which has shown activities spanning the world in recent years. The song “Timtarin” features Moroccan female singer Hindi Zahara and performs an attractive duet. Furthermore, “Tabsit” is a track recorded by inviting tonkori player OKI (OKI DUB AINU BAND) and shamisen player Sakata Jun (Tokyo Tsukimo Shamisen) as guests when they visited Japan in 2019. An unprecedented experiment of collaboration between desert blues, Ainu music, and Japanese music is being carried out here.
After many tours, the band came together even more, and as a result, I was able to listen to the best ensemble ever. It seems to be an important work that heralds a new phase of desert blues.
