The Essex-class aircraft carrier was designed based on the previous Yorktown-class, with expanded flight decks and hangars to accommodate increased aircraft capacity, and enhanced defenses and anti-aircraft armament. The lead ship of this class, Essex, was commissioned in December 1942. As the U.S. Navy continued to expand its fleet, a total of 17 sister ships were completed during the Pacific War.
