The Kaiten, a human torpedo where the crew member acts as the "eye" of the torpedo to launch suicide attacks against enemy ships, was developed in a short period of approximately five months starting in March 1944, as the war situation worsened. It utilized the engine and propulsion system of the "Type 93 torpedo," a weapon the Japanese Navy boasted to the world at the time, and possessed 1500 kg of explosive (twice the amount of a torpedo) and a range that allowed it to launch attacks from outside the range of enemy torpedoes. Initially, it was intended to be launched from submarines, and numerous attacks were conducted, but launch bases were also established along the coast of mainland Japan where enemy landings were anticipated.
