Specifications The Handley Page Hampden was a bomber manufactured by Handley Page and used by the Royal Air Force in the early stages of World War II. Developed based on the 1932 specification B.2/32, the prototype first flew in June 1936. The first mass-produced aircraft, featuring a revised nose design, made its first flight in May 1938. It was an all-metal twin-engine aircraft, featuring a novel design for its time, including a narrow fuselage and slats on the leading edges of the outer wings to reduce air resistance. For this reason, soldiers nicknamed it the "flying frying pan."
