Product introduction
A long-awaited CD adaptation of an unrivaled Afro-Brazilian x jazz masterpiece released by Brazilian Bahia pianist Marcelo Gartel!
Marcelo Gartel's debut work, which was sold on record at the end of 2021 and became a hot topic, was made into a long-awaited CD by Rocinante (Rocinante), which is becoming a label representing modern Brazil.
Retieres Reich (1959-2021) was a master representing the contemporary Brazilian music world and made great contributions to Afro-Brazilian music. Pianist Marcelo Gartel from Bahia played an active role in Quintet led by Lettierz as his close aide.
In this work, which is the debut work, two percussionists are placed in place of drummers while being based on a traditional jazz piano trio. With a colorful and close ensemble in the background, they perform on pianos that are sometimes lyrical and sometimes abstract. There are no explosive festivities that generally come to mind when you hear Afro-Brazilian music, but intense Afro-Brazilian character exudes a strong Afro-Brazilian character in the microcosmic ensemble evoked by its mellow rhythms and the piano where influences from giants such as Thelonious Monk, Messians, and Drival Caymi are in harmony.
Liner notes were contributed by Lechieres Leitch, who is also her mentor. At the beginning, it is described as “a completely original Afro-Brazilian piano, which was my dream, realized,” and it is known how epoch-making this work was. Along with Amaro Freitas's “Sankofa” (2021) and “Moacir de Todos Ossantos” (2022) by Lechieres Reich & Orchestra Humpirez, it can be said that it is a piece showing the future of Afro-Brazilian jazz.
*Includes Japanese translation of liner notes by Retieres Leitch
