This live-action film is based on Riyoko Ikeda's "The Rose of Versailles," serialized in Weekly Margaret since 1972!
The original manga has been adapted into an animated TV series and a stage production by the Takarazuka Revue, and continues to enjoy enduring popularity. For the live-action film, producer Mataichiro Yamamoto secured ¥1 billion in funding from Shiseido, Nippon Television Network, and Toho.
The film featured an all-foreign cast and crew, including director Jacques Demy ("The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"), music by Michel Legrand, and Catriona McCall, who was selected from 400 auditions in Hollywood, London, and Paris, for the role of Oscar. The film was shot entirely in France, a groundbreaking style in Japanese film history.
The producer's enthusiasm, especially the French government's special permission to film at the Palace of Versailles, adds a luxurious and dignified atmosphere to the film, lending it an unparalleled sense of authenticity. Another highlight is the stunning recreation of many of the original's most famous scenes.
For this release, the original film negative was scanned in 6K and digitally restored in 2K to create a beautiful new master. Additionally, the Japanese dub, recorded for the first time on the package, includes the original Japanese dub from the October 8, 1980 broadcast on Nippon Television's "Wednesday Roadshow"! (Oscar: Natsuko Minami, André: Katsuyuki Hori)
[Story]
1755, France under the reign of Louis XV. A baby girl is born to the family of General Jarjayes. Worried about the future of his all-female family, the general names the child Oscar and resolves to raise him as a boy. André, the wet nurse's grandson, is called in to play with her.
In 1775, Oscar, having grown into a fine soldier, is assigned to the Royal Guard attached to Queen Marie Antoinette, who has just married from Austria to France as Crown Princess, and André takes a job as a stable hand at the royal palace. The aristocrats lived lavish lives at the Palace of Versailles. However, in contrast to the wealth of Versailles, the city of Paris was plagued by illness and poverty was rampant on the streets. When Oscar met Rosalie, a young woman who was trying to sell her body to escape poverty, she learned for the first time about the hardships facing the people of Paris. Marie Antoinette, who pursued the latest trends in singing and fashion with Madame de Polignac, a courtier, and was extravagant in her spending, was in love with Fersen despite being married to Louis XVI. Oscar eventually fell in love with Fersen, the queen's lover. One day, a dress was delivered to the Jarjayes family. Wearing the dress for the first time, Oscar danced with Fersen, but decided to give up on this love. She requested a transfer from the Royal Guard to the rough-and-tumble Guards, and committed herself to a life as a soldier. The revolution began with the "Necklace Affair." Finally accepting her childhood friend Andre's deep love, Oscar joins him in the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789...
