Product Introduction
1/32 scale plastic model.
Developed as a support fighter for the Bf 109, the Fw 190A series surpassed the Bf 109 in many ways. The D-series, equipped with a liquid-cooled Jumo 213 engine, was developed to address its only weakness: a sudden drop in engine power above 6,000 meters. However, the targeted improvement in high-altitude performance was not sufficient.
However, due to the dramatic improvement in flight performance below medium altitudes, the German Air Force decided to adopt it as a new medium-altitude fighter. Production of the first mass-produced D-series model, the D-9, began in August 1944.
The D-series consisted of seven types (including plans only), from the D-9 to the D-15, with the D-9 being the most widely produced.
Nicknamed "Langnasen-Dora" (Long-Nosed Dora) due to its long, slender nose, the aircraft featured an extended rear fuselage and a larger vertical stabilizer to compensate for the longer nose.
The standard canopy for late-production D-9s was the Garland Haube, with its large bulge at the top.
The Papegaistaffel (Parrot Squadron) was organized within Lieutenant General Garland's elite JV44 (44th Fighter Group) to provide air cover for Me 262 jet fighters during takeoff and landing.
The bright red and white stripes on the underside of the aircraft were intended to avoid accidental fire from friendly anti-aircraft guns.
