What is Shichishima Iku from Kunisaki Peninsula, Oita Prefecture?
Shichishima igusa is a plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family and has a history of 350 years, and Ryukyu tatami refers to tatami mats that use the tatami surface of this Shichishima igusa.
Because Shichishima i has a triangular cross section, it is difficult to automate weaving, and even today the weaving process requires skill, making it a rare crop with only a few farmers now producing it.
The Shichito Islands, which have excellent characteristics such as cultural value and strength, have been registered under the Geographical Indication Protection System (GI) as the Kunisaki Seven Islands.
<Characteristics of Shichishimai>
The tatami mats of Shichishimai are so durable that they were even used as tatami mats in judo halls.
Compared to regular tatami mats, it is more durable and resistant to fire, and since it is not dyed with mud after being cut, the natural smooth feel of the material is appreciated.
<Handling Precautions>
Zori sandals are made of natural plant material and are not resistant to water.
If the sandals get wet, they may absorb moisture and cause the grass/cloth fabric to deteriorate, so please be careful not to get them wet.
If the zori sandals become dirty, use a brush to remove the dirt, then wipe the dirt with a tightly wrung out rag and dry slowly in a shaded area with low humidity and good ventilation.
Drying in direct sunlight may cause other materials to deteriorate and may damage the sandals.
If you will not be using the product for a while, we recommend storing it in a shoe cabinet or other place with as little humidity as possible and out of direct sunlight.
Zori sandals are made of natural materials, and the material itself breathes, so it absorbs moisture from the air.
Even if you put it in a box, etc., the humidity inside will increase if it is placed in a high temperature area, which may cause an outbreak. We recommend that you use moisture-absorbing material under your sandals.
