Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) was born the eldest son of a greengrocer in Nishikikoji, Kyoto. While running the business, he began studying painting after the age of 30. Initially, like other painters, he sought out the Kano school, which was the mainstream at the time. However, believing that "as long as I learn from the Kano school, I cannot develop my own style that is different from the Kano school," he left the art school and honed his skills through self-study. At the age of 40, he handed over the family business to his younger brother and began to concentrate on painting. Jakuchu was a lone wolf painter, but he became so famous that he was listed second only to Maruyama Okyo in the "Heian Jinbutsu Shi," a directory of cultural figures and prominent people of the time. In his later years, in contrast to his earlier colorful works, he began to create ink-rubbing prints. In 1788, his home and workplace were completely destroyed in the Great Fire of Tenmei, but he left behind many works before his death at the ripe old age of 85. He was re-evaluated after the "Jakuchu and Edo Painting" exhibition held at the Tokyo National Museum in 2006, and was also popular at the "Jakuchu 300th Anniversary Exhibition" held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in the spring of 2016.
