Product introduction
Introducing the unknown Gnarwha culture that has sprung up in Brussels!
Morocco is a North African country located at the westernmost tip of the Islamic world. Gnawa (Gnawa) is one of the representative songs of that country, and is also categorized as Sufi music. Originally, it was a term indicating black Africans brought from West Africa to North Africa in the 17th century, but at some point it became the name of music born from West African traditions mixed with Islamic culture. I thought Morocco was the only country where gnawas flourished, but in fact, they also spread to Brussels, the capital of the European country Belgium, and created their own unique gnawas. This is the first work to introduce the unknown Gnarwha culture in Brussels.
This work was created by the Brussels label 'Muziekpublique', which until now has presented unique world music works such as “Amelie” (MZR-7118) and “World Traditional Vocal Tour” (MZR-7116) by Refuges for Refuges. The company, which is also an NPO corporation that plans concerts etc. in the same area, regularly performs concerts at its own hall and teaches performances of various folk instruments on a daily basis. Moroccans began to move to Brussels, where they are based, over half a century ago in the 1960s and formed a community. In the 90s, when one Gnarwa master came there, other Gnarwa musicians gradually followed suit, and now about 40 musicians have gathered.
The title 'Jola' is a word meaning “travel” in the Moroccan dialect of Arabic, and it is an important keyword for those starting to learn Gnawa. It seems that Gnarwa musicians meet various other musicians by traveling, and it is important to absorb and improve their skills. This work is centered around young Gnarwa musicians living in Brussels, and while having them listen to traditional Gnaawa with vocals of call & response with Genbri (stringed instruments) /karkaba (iron castanets) in the background, it also simultaneously entertains styles that haven't been introduced much until now, such as songs with women as the lead vocals and percussion ensembles using double-sided taiko drums (tbal).
Unknown Gnarwha music that lives in Brussels. It is a work where you can feel a pure spirit not found in the real world.
